Faith That Stops at No Obstacle

In Luke Chapter 5, we read about four men who tried to bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus. Confronted by locked doors and a massive crowd that physically blocked their way into the house, they did not turn back. Instead of giving in to disappointment, they took a radical step — climbing onto the roof and removing the tiles to lower the mat with the sick man directly before Christ.

“One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick. Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus. When Jesus saw their faith, he said, ‘Friend, your sins are forgiven.’”

True faith is not measured by the absence of difficulties or obstacles, but by the willingness to overcome them for the sake of meeting Christ. It is worth noting that on that day, the people standing in the way of Jesus were religious leaders — Pharisees and teachers of the law, who took up all the space and refused to move aside. This serves as a warning for everyone: sometimes religious habits or personal comfort can become an obstacle for others on their path to God.

The Power of Sacrificial Friendship and “The Burden of Love”

The paralyzed man suffered not only from a physical condition, but also from the paralysis of loneliness — a state where a person feels needed by no one. However, true friends stood by his side, showing a love that could be felt in tangible and practical ways. They took up the burden, brought him to the Savior, and shared in his destiny.

Examples of service and support are also evident throughout history:

• The Parents of Nick Vujicic: Born without limbs, Nick could have ended up in an institution, as doctors advised. However, his believing parents “carried him on the stretcher of love” and successfully advocated for changes in Australian legislation so that children with disabilities could attend mainstream schools. This enabled Nick to become a world-renowned motivational speaker and minister.
• The Friend of Joni Eareckson Tada: Suffering a severe spinal cord injury at the age of 17, Joni remained paralyzed from the neck down. During times of deep despair and suicidal thoughts, it was the prayers and unwavering support of a faithful friend that helped her undergo a spiritual transformation. Today, the ministry “Joni and Friends” helps people with disabilities across the globe, including in Ukraine.

Spiritual Priority: “Heart First, Body Second”

The most vital element in this biblical account is the sequence of Jesus’ actions. The crowd and the friends expected immediate physical healing, but Christ spoke first to the deeper need: “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”

God looks beyond surface symptoms to the root of the problem. Physical healing, material prosperity, or comfort are temporary. If a person’s heart remains afflicted by sin, resentment, or rebellion against the Creator, external healing will not bring eternal salvation.

Christ does not engage in mere “cosmetic repairs” of human life. He acts as a spiritual surgeon: first cleansing the heart and freeing it from guilt, and only then providing everything needed for bodily and earthly life.
