Can you enjoy everyday life? / Joyce Mayer

Is it possible to enjoy everyday life?

We spend a lot of time on everyday tasks or daily duties: washing, cleaning, buying groceries, visiting the dentist, washing dishes, going to work, etc. We believe that all these matters cannot be called spiritual. Many believers prefer spiritual matters (prayer, church attendance, reading Christian literature, etc.) to ordinary matters. But such a bend can cause a lot of problems.

Often, we try to finish our ordinary affairs as quickly as possible in order to engage in spiritual affairs, thinking that in this way we will be closer to God. This attitude is extreme. For some, even the thought that they will have to do ordinary things again is unpleasant. But there is nowhere to go from them. They are part of our life. In fact, ordinary affairs are no less important than spiritual affairs. Read the Bible, meditate on the Word, and you will become spiritually strong, but do not neglect everyday duties. Satan is against you enjoying life. If he succeeds in convincing you that you only please God when you do something spiritual, you will lose peace and joy in your heart.

Everything we do, we must do as for the Lord, and if we put our whole soul into it, then this work becomes holy. Even such an everyday thing as, for example, buying groceries, can be no less spiritual than prayer. It is clear that prayer is more important in the life of a believer than going shopping, but that does not mean that we should not go to the store. Simply, prayer has eternal value, and going to the store or cleaning the apartment does not affect eternity.

Here is what the Scriptures say about this issue: “One distinguishes day from day, and another judges each day the same. Each one acts according to the testimony of his own mind. He who distinguishes days, distinguishes for the Lord; and he who does not distinguish days, does not distinguish for the Lord. (Romans 14:5-6).

Let’s paraphrase this passage: “One man considers prayer and Bible study a holier occupation than ordinary business. But another, truly wise person looks at them equally, because everything he does, he does for the Lord.”

We will be able to enjoy life if we do not divide things into holy and ordinary things, because then we will not try to avoid ordinary things in order to do holy things.

I realized this when I was flying. I reasoned that when I got to the place, I would start praying and studying the Word. I did not find a seat during the flight, thinking that I was wasting my time. But God told me to relax and enjoy the flight. God is holy, and by dwelling in you, He makes you holy, and therefore everything you do is also made holy by His presence.

I remember a phrase that made a great impression on me. On the door of one pastor’s office was a sign: “My job is to worship God.” I constantly remind myself of these words so that I can get the same pleasure from everyday things as from prayer, studying the Word and everything that is considered spiritual.
