“The crown that death will not take away” – Sunday sermon from July 26, 2026

The essence of Christian character formation

The formation of Christian character does not occur in isolation from the world, but during practical trials and daily service. The shared experience of overcoming everyday challenges, serving children, and helping each other is a vivid illustration of the spiritual path of a believer — from leaving the “city of perdition” to achieving an eternal goal.

All human notions of morality, righteousness, or “rightness” must be constantly tested and corrected by God’s Word. The only steadfast and perfect Guide is Jesus Christ. Unlike any earthly authority or spiritual leader who, because of human limitations, can err or fall, Christ is the One who never betrays, never disappoints, and always remains faithful.

Faithfulness as a critical condition for eternity

Among the many striking features of the Christian character, there is one fundamental quality, without which a person is unable to enter the Kingdom of Heaven – this faithfulness. It is not simply an emotional impulse or a choice under favorable circumstances, but is tested in times of pressure, trial and persecution.

“Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
Revelation 2:10 ESV

The call to be faithful “unto death” means to remain faithful to God throughout one’s earthly journey, regardless of the external environment or security conditions. Earthly crowns, possessions, and status remain in the material world after a person dies, while the crown of eternal life is the only reward that retains absolute value in eternity.

The currency of eternity: Loyalty in small things

The real spiritual test is daily faithfulness in things that seem insignificant. Man tends to classify things into “big” and “small”, focusing efforts where there is instant profit or earthly recognition. However, in God’s coordinate system, the opposite principle works.

“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.”

Faithfulness is not a single heroic act, but a continuous chain of daily choices to submit one’s life to the Creator.

A visible quality of Christian character

Loyalty cannot remain hidden or abstract; it is necessarily materialized in actions, attitude towards others and compliance with the given word. If a person is not able to be faithful in relationships with those whom he sees around him, his claim of faithfulness to an invisible God is an illusion.

“If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?”
1 John 4:20 NLT

Practical manifestations of loyalty to God:

• God comes first: Subordination of one’s ambitions, resources, time and talents to God’s will.
• Fulfillment of the commandments: Manifestation of love for God through practical concern for one’s neighbor.
• Consistency in everyday life: Daily work, prayer and filling the heart with God’s Word for protection from sin.

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

The historical embodiment of the principle: The exploit of Sir Nicholas Winton

A vivid example of loyalty in small things and giving up one’s own comfort for the sake of saving others is the story Sir Nicholas Winton. In 1938, after canceling a vacation at a ski resort, he went to Prague and, seeing refugee camps, took it upon himself to save children from the Nazi threat.

Despite the lack of official status and state support, Winton, together with like-minded people, organized the removal of 669 children to foster families in Great Britain. For 50 years he kept this secret, not seeking earthly fame or rewards, until his notebook was accidentally discovered in 1988. His act became a salvation for thousands of descendants of rescued children, confirming the wisdom: “Whoever saves one life, saves the whole world.”

Decision Time: How to Apply Loyalty to Your Life

Loyalty requires an active decision to act on the principle: “If not me, then who?”. It is tested in everyday affairs, when we put aside our own selfishness for the sake of fulfilling God’s calling. The invitation to faithfulness is a call to seek God’s face daily, to fill the heart with the Word and to be faithful to the end in order to receive the eternal, incorruptible crown of life from the hands of Christ.
