Future loyalty

“I… will bring upon them all the good that I have foretold about them.” — Jeremiah 32:42
Sarah lost her mother when she was only fourteen years old. Soon she and her siblings also lost their home and became homeless. Years later, Sarah wanted to provide her future children with an inheritance that would be passed down through the generations. She worked hard to buy a house and provide her family with a permanent home, a home she never had.
Investing in a home for future generations is an act of faith in a future that is not yet visible. God commanded the prophet Jeremiah to buy land just before the brutal siege of Jerusalem by the Babylonians (Jer. 32:6-12). God’s instructions were incomprehensible to the prophet, considering that soon all the property of the people would be confiscated.
However, God gave Jeremiah a promise: “Just as I brought all this great evil upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good that I foretold about them” (v. 42). The prophetic investment in property was a physical sign of God’s faithfulness in the future return of the Israelites to their homeland. Even in spite of the terrible attack, God promised His people that peace would return, property and houses would be sold and bought again (vv. 43-44).
We can rely on God’s faithfulness and “invest” in faith. Although we may not see a solution to every situation, we are sure that one day God will have everything under control.
What makes you forget about God’s faithfulness? What might your “investment” be in the context of His promised restoration?
Dear God, help me today to invest in a future I cannot yet see.
